Last week we attended the 2011 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year presentation to South Australia's top 10 bartenders, held at the Rob Roy Hotel in Adelaide.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the top 10 bartenders (pictured below) to get together and celebrate their month of hard work and fundraising.
South Australia's 2011 U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year is Cole Hedwards from the Bellum Hotel in Mount Schank. Cole was joined at the presentation by hotel owners Simon Livingstone and Lisa Edwards (pictured above, with our Managing Director, Joe Thorp).
Simon and Lisa were also heavily involved in the fundraising. In fact, Lisa shaved her head, and Simon submitted to a body wax!
Cole was the third highest U.G.L.Y. Bartender in South Australia in 2010, raising $11,700.
This year he was determined to not only be the highest in 2011, but to also break the record as the highest ever South Australian fundraiser.
He definitely achieved both of his goals, this year raising over $23,000 for Leukaemia Australia.
Cole and the folks at the Bellum Hotel held a range of events to raise this record-breaking amount, including a reverse raffle, a High Tea with vintage dress auction, and a Ladies Night, where the above mentioned head shaving and waxing occurred.
The local community of Mount Schank and nearby town Mount Gambier were pivotal in Cole and the Bellum Hotel's success. They've also seen first hand how the Leukaemia Foundation helps patients, with two local people accessing the foundation's services during their treatment.
This reinforces the important role pubs play at the centre of local communities, and how illnesses such as leukaemia and blood disorders impact the wider community.
Bellum Hotel will add this accolade to the many they have acquired over the years, including multiple AHA SA awards, such as Best Pub Burger.
As the hotel already features one of our cube ice machines (and our Lancer draught beer dispensing equipment) we spoke with Lisa and Simon about the new ice machine that we will be providing as their prize.
The Bellum Hotel is located in a prime seafood area, and their menu features oysters, prawns, lobster etc. They told us that they are keen to display their fresh seafood on a bed of ice, so we have recommended one of our flaker ice machines, ideal for this purpose.
